The Central Florida Stamp & Sign Family:
Jay Hoskins 2015
Central Florida Stamp and Sign is currently owned and managed by Jay Hoskins who started the family business with his parents Jerry and Betty Hoskins over 40 years ago.
It was the early 1980’s when Jerry and Betty left their careers with the Federal government and Marriott respectively to put all their energy into Central Florida Stamp and Sign. Their first downtown location at 25 East Pine Street was down the street from Pencrafters, a designer of custom pens and engraved products. Jerry played cribbage regularly with the owner of Pencrafters and when he retired sold his business to Jerry and Betty. The newly merged company was named Central Florida Stamp and Sign and Pencrafters of Central Florida.
In 1985 Jerry and Betty moved the business to 55 North Orange Avenue across the street from the Beacham Theater. Jay retired from the Orange County Fire Department in August 1990 and joined the company full time. In 1998 the business moved to 139 East Pine Street. In the early 1990′s Gilbert Price, a typesetting expert from New York City brought his expertise to the company. The team of three grew the business into the success it is today. Jay has managed through the loss of his wife Jeana 15 years ago to cancer and then his father passing away in 2011 at 86 and his mother in 2014 at 85. Through it all Jay has maintained his strong relationships with his customers. Says Jay, “My customers are friends as well as customers. When they stop by we share pictures of kids and their kids. My customers are my extended family. I’d do anything to get their order to them.”
Jay has been active in the community since he was 5 years old, playing drums and marching in the first parade at Walt Disney World for the opening day ceremonies. He also is a charter member of SeaWorld, as an annual pass holder since their opening year in 1972. After graduating from Evans High School in 1973, Jay went on to have a successful career with the Orange County Fire Department specializing in automobile extrications. He taught other departments their techniques in locations from Juneau and Anchorage Alaska to Puerto Rico. Today, Jay serves as Chairman of the board of trustees of the First United Methodist Church of Pine Hills which he has been a member of since he was 5 years old. Jay also continues his drumming with occasional performances around Central Florida.
“We treat every order with care. We put the same amount of pride in our work whether it’s a single stamp or a customer who orders large quantities” Jay says proudly. “I love coming to work each day and helping my customers.”
